Question: Is it permissible to work for SoFi doing anti money laundering type work that does not directly deal with interest and it's contracts. The reason of asking is because it appear 60% of their revenue is from interest and the rest is from other sources.

Answer:
الجـواب حامـدا ومصليـا

If a company earns more than 50% of its revenue through haram means, such as interest (riba), then it is not permissible to work for that company, even if the role itself is permissible in isolation, like AML or compliance. This is because the employee’s salary is being paid primarily from haram income , which renders the employment haram.

If this is the case with SoFi — that more than 60% of its revenue comes from riba — then it is impermissible to work for SoFi, regardless of the department, due to the overwhelmingly unlawful nature of its income.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

“Seeking a halal income is an obligation after the obligation.”
(Bayhaqī in Shuʿab al-Īmān)

He also warned:

“No flesh is nourished by haram except that the Fire is more deserving of it.”
(Tirmidhī)

Thus, a Muslim must seek employment where both the nature of the work and the source of the income are halal.

And Allah knows best.
